Early Life and Family
Jack Layton, a Canadian politician and former leader of the left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), was born in Montreal in 1950 and raised in Hudson, Quebec. His family had a strong history of social activism. His great-grandfather, despite being blind, advocated for disability pensions for the blind alongside his wife in the 1930s. His grandfather, Gilbert Layton, served as a cabinet minister in Maurice Duplessis' Union Nationale government but resigned on principle. Layton's father, Robert Layton, became a Conservative MP under Brian Mulroney's administration.

Student Activism and NDP Involvement
While studying at McGill University, Layton co-founded student housing cooperatives, sparking his enduring passion for accessible housing. Inspired by Tommy Douglas' stance on human rights during the October Crisis, he joined the NDP in 1970.

Academic and Political Career
Layton pursued graduate studies in international investment and public policy at York University, earning a PhD in 1984. He subsequently taught at three universities and served as a lecturer in the geography department at the University of Toronto.
Layton was elected six times to the Toronto City Council, accumulating over two decades of experience in local governance.
Personal Life and Religious Affiliation
Jack Layton's wife, Olivia Chow, is a former Toronto City Councillor and NDP federal MP. Layton was a member of the United Church of Canada.
