Early Life and EducationJustin [Yu Chen] Sun was born on July 10, 1990, in Shandong Province, China. With a strong academic foundation, Sun pursued higher education at prestigious institutions within China and abroad. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Peking University in 2011, where he also studied alongside Bitmain founder Jihan Wu. Additionally, Sun studied humanities at the University of Hong Kong for a year from 2009 to 2010. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Arts in Political Economy from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013.
Career Beginnings
Driven by a passion for technology, Sun began his career at Ripple Labs as their representative in China from 2013 to 2016. Prior to this, in 2012, he discovered and immersed himself in the world of Bitcoin.
Founding PEIWO and TRON
Concurrently with his Ripple Labs position, Sun established PEIWO, a popular voice messaging app in China. As its founder and CEO, he secured funding from notable investors like IDG Capital Partners and China Equity. In 2016, Sun left Ripple Labs to embark on his own venture, focusing on the cryptocurrency market.
In September 2017, Sun founded the TRON Foundation, aiming to accelerate the decentralization of the internet through blockchain technology and decentralized apps (DApps). The team launched the MaiNet platform in May 2018, propelling the project forward.
Acquisition of BitTorrent and TVM Launch
Seizing an opportunity, Sun acquired BitTorrent, owner of the file-sharing app uTorrent, for $140 million in July 2018. With approximately 3% of global internet traffic utilizing the app, Sun envisioned integrating it with the TRON network. Furthermore, the TRON team introduced the TRON Virtual Machine in August 2018, fostering the development of DApps on the platform.
Legacy and Impact
As of 2021, Tron boasts over 90 million users, according to its official website. Sun's contributions to the cryptocurrency industry have significantly influenced the landscape. In late 2021, Coindesk reported that he stepped down as head of Tron to become Grenada's ambassador to the World Trade Organization.
