Early Life and Education
Born on September 12, 1940, in the village of Karadka in the Madras Presidency of British India (now Kasaragod district, Kerala, India), Tirumalesh obtained a Master's degree in English Literature and a PhD in Linguistics.
Literary Career
Modernism and NavyaTirumalesh's literary journey began in the 1960s with the publication of his poetry collection "Mukhavaadagalu" ("Masks", 1968), which showcased his adherence to Navya, a modernist school of writing in Kannada literature.
Beyond Modernism: "Mahaprasthana"
His anthology "Mahaprasthana" (1971) marked a departure from Navya, exploring themes of disillusionment after triumph against the backdrop of the Pandavas' mythological celestial journey.
Epic Fragmentation: "Akshaya Kavya"
Tirumalesh described his poetry collection "Akshaya Kavya" (2010) as an "epic fragment." Inspired by writers like Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, and Charles Olson, the work is characterized by its extensive length, fragmented nature, and absence of a linear storyline or didactic purpose. This collection garnered him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2016.
Academic and Professional Life
Alongside his literary endeavors, Tirumalesh served as a professor at the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad. After his retirement, he taught English in Yemen for a period of time.
