Bruce Palmer Jr.: A Dedicated Soldier and Leader
Early Life and Military BackgroundBorn in Austin, Texas, on April 13, 1913, Bruce Palmer Jr. hailed from a military lineage. His father rose to the rank of Brigadier General, while his grandfather earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War. In 1936, Palmer graduated from West Point as a Second Lieutenant and joined the 8th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Promotions and Career Advancements
Over the next three decades, Palmer's military career blossomed. He commanded the 6th Cavalry Mechanized Squadron, served in the Operations Division of the War Department General Staff, and became Chief of Staff for the 6th Infantry Division in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he was promoted to Captain and later to Major. He commanded the 63rd Infantry Division in Korea and held various staff positions within the Army.
Overseas Assignments and Command Responsibilities
Palmer's service extended to Europe, where he served with U.S. Army Europe. He later commanded the 2nd Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. Notably, he was appointed Commander of the expeditionary force in the Dominican Republic during the 1965 crisis.
Chief of Staff of the Army
From July 1, 1972, to October 11, 1972, Palmer served as the 26th Chief of Staff of the United States Army. He oversaw the reduction of U.S. forces in Vietnam and prepared major inspections and reforms within the Army organization.
Post-Military Career and Legacy
Following his retirement in 1974, General Palmer authored books on the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He spent his later years in Virginia, where he passed away on October 10, 2000. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside his parents.
