Early Life and Education
Karl-Theodor Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg was born on December 5, 1971, in Munich, Germany, into an aristocratic family with a long lineage. His father, Enoch, was a renowned conductor, while his grandfather, Karl Theodor, was a state secretary under Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger in the 1960s. Guttenberg's great-grandfather, Karl Ludwig, was executed for his involvement in a plot against Adolf Hitler in 1944.

Guttenberg attended the Ignaz-Guenther-Gymnasium in Rosenheim and later served in the Bundeswehr's 233rd Mountain Infantry Battalion in Mittenwald. In 1992, he enrolled at the University of Bayreuth, where he studied law and political science. In 2007, he completed his doctoral dissertation with distinction, focusing on the constitutional development of the United States and the European Union.

Business Career
Alongside his studies, Guttenberg began managing the family business in 1994. He worked as a financial lawyer in Frankfurt and New York before taking over as head of the Munich-based company, Guttenberg GmbH. He also served on the advisory board of Rhon-Klinikum, a medical company in which his family held a 26% stake.

Early Political Career
Guttenberg entered politics in 2002, when he was elected to the Kulmbach district council and to the German parliament as a representative of the Christian Social Union (CSU). He became a member of the Bundestag's foreign affairs committee and head of the CSU/CDU parliamentary group on foreign policy. He advocated against Turkey's entry into the European Union.

In 2005, Guttenberg was re-elected to the Bundestag with a large majority. He was appointed chairman of the CSU presidium in Upper Franconia in 2007, a position he maintained after subsequent appointments. From 2008 to 2009, he served as the CSU's secretary-general, distinguishing himself from previous incumbents who focused on "dirty populist work" by building his own image.
Ministerial Appointments
In the wake of the global economic crisis, Guttenberg was appointed Minister of Economics and Technology in February 2009. As the youngest person to hold this office in German history, he oversaw Germany's economic recovery measures and negotiated the sale of the Opel car company.
Following the 2009 parliamentary elections, Guttenberg became Germany's youngest Minister of Defense on October 28, 2009. He supported the continuation and expansion of Germany's military presence in Afghanistan, despite public opposition.
Personal Life and Affiliations
Guttenberg is married to Countess Stephanie Bismarck-Schonhausen, a great-great-great-granddaughter of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. They have two daughters, Anna Benedicte Maria and Mathilde. Guttenberg is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the Bundesakademie fuer Sicherheitspolitik, the German Council on Foreign Relations, and the European Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a music patron and a fan of AC/DC.
