Biography of Katya Krema
Early Life and CareerKatya Krema is an Australian alpine skier who began ice skating at the age of three on Mount Buller, Victoria. From the ski school, Krema joined the freestyle skiing team and soon became a member of a racing club, where skiing quickly turned into a true passion for her. In her first club race, eleven-year-old Katya participated in the Victoria State Championship (in the under-12 group). In her last race among children, Krema competed in the under-14 group but already at the Australian Championship.
International Competitions
Krema was selected as a member of the National Children's Alpine Ski Team and competed twice at the Junior World Championships (Topolino) in Italy in 2003 and 2004. In her first international competition under the auspices of the International Ski Federation (FIS), Katya immediately became a representative of the Victorian Alpine Ski Team. Showing outstanding results, Krema won the Australian National FIS Championship title in 2005. She defended this title for the next two years and then became the champion again in 2009, recovering from an injury she sustained in 2008. The Australian skier was awarded the prestigious 'Junior Skier of the Year' in the 2004-2005 season and in 2006-2007.
Olympic and World Championships
In 2007, Katya became part of the Australian National Ski Team. She was selected to represent her country at the Junior World Championships in Flachau, Austria, where she finished 46th in slalom. Krema competed internationally again in 2008 in Formigal, Spain, which marked the end of her junior career. She made her debut on the World Cup in ski cross at Le Contamine, France, finishing 18th. Her performance in the ski cross event proved that she excelled at the world-class level. Her best result in the World Cup in Sierra Nevada, Spain, was 11th place, but she finished 18th overall. Unfortunately, the season ended prematurely for Katya due to an ACL injury she sustained in a fall in Mayringen, Switzerland. After a complete knee reconstruction and two knee surgeries, Krema made a successful comeback. She participated in the 2009 Freestyle World Championships in Inawashiro, Japan, where she finished 26th.
Later Career and Personal Life
Krema became a member of the Australian Olympic Shadow Team that competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Outside of skiing, she is a student at the University of Melbourne, studying architecture.
