Early Life and Football BeginningsKazuyoshi Miura, born in 1967, is widely regarded as the oldest professional footballer in the world. His passion for soccer was influenced by his older brother, Yasutoshi. At the young age of 15, Miura left Japan for Brazil to pursue his dream of becoming a professional.
Brazilian Journey
In Brazil, Miura joined the youth academy of Atlético Juventus. By 1986, he had begun his professional career with Santos. Over the next four years, he played for several Brazilian clubs, including Palmeiras and Coritiba, establishing himself as a talented forward.
Return to Japan and Domestic Success
In 1990, Miura returned to Japan as a star. He joined Yomiuri FC, which later became Verdy Kawasaki after the launch of the J-League in 1993. As a member of Verdy, he won four consecutive J-League titles alongside teammates Ruy Ramos and Tsuyoshi Kitazawa.
International Recognition and European Adventure
In 1993, Miura became the first Japanese footballer to play for an Italian club, joining Genoa C.F.C. After a relatively unsuccessful stint in Italy, he returned to Verdy Kawasaki in 1998. Despite the setback, Miura continued to seek challenges abroad. He played briefly for Dinamo Zagreb and A.F.C Bournemouth before returning to Japan.
Later Career
From 2005 onwards, Miura played for various Japanese clubs, including Yokohama F.C., Kyoto Purple Sanga, and Vissel Kobe. In 2005, he also had a brief loan spell with Sydney FC in the A-League. Throughout his career, Miura has become known for his signature move, the "Kazu Feint," and his celebratory dance.
International Career
Miura represented the Japanese national team from 1990 to 2000. He played in 89 matches, scoring 55 goals, second only to Kunishige Kamamoto in the team's history. His most notable international performance was at the 1992 Asian Cup, where he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Continuing Legacy
Despite his advanced age, Miura continues to play professionally in Japan. He recently signed a one-year contract extension with his team, Suzuka Point Getters, at the age of 47. Miura's dedication to his sport and his remarkable longevity have made him an inspiration to both fans and fellow players alike.
