Kelly Craft: A Diplomat's Journey
Early Life and EducationKelly Craft was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, on February 26, 1964. The daughter of a Democratic Party activist, she attended Glasgow High School and graduated in 1980. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1984.
Political Beginnings
In 2004, Craft became a prominent supporter of George W. Bush. She and her husband also supported Marco Rubio and Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. In 2007, President Bush appointed Craft as an alternate delegate to the United Nations, where she focused on U.S. involvement in Africa.
Ambassador to Canada
On June 15, 2017, President Trump nominated Craft as ambassador to Canada. Her nomination was confirmed by the Senate on August 3, and she assumed office on October 23. As ambassador, Craft represented the United States in a key bilateral relationship.
United Nations Appointment
On February 22, 2019, President Trump nominated Craft to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The Senate approved her nomination on July 30, and she took office on September 12.
