Early Life and Education
Voislav Gecic was born in Serbia and began his musical journey at the Novi Sad University Academy of Music. He studied under Ekuthon Kaderova-Mihaylovic, a Uzbekian pianist who was a disciple of Lev Brumberg at the Moscow Conservatory. Gecic graduated in 1982.
Teaching Career
Immediately after graduating, Gecic joined the Novi Sad University Academy of Music as a piano instructor. He rose through the ranks to become the head of the piano department, a position he held until 1999. Among his notable students was Misha Dacic.
International Recognition
Gecic's international breakthrough came in 1985 when he participated in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. While he did not win any major awards, he received a special prize from the Hanover Chopin Society for his exceptional rendition of a sonata. This performance was recorded and released in Germany and Japan, selling over 140,000 copies.
Exploration of Romantic Virtuosos
In the late 1980s, Gecic dedicated himself to studying the works of Franz Liszt. His recording of the "Transcendental Etudes," first released in Japan in 1994, received critical acclaim and was reissued in the United States in 1997. Gecic's interpretation of Liszt's complex and virtuosic compositions solidified his reputation as a master of Romantic piano repertoire.
International Success and Professorship
In 1999, Gecic performed at the International Piano Festival in Miami. His performance coincided with the tragic bombing of Novi Sad by U.S. forces, leaving him deeply affected. Nonetheless, his virtuoso performance received glowing reviews and led to an offer of a professorship at the University of Florida, where he continues to teach and perform.
Critical Acclaim and Versatility
Gecic's performances have drawn praise from critics worldwide. They have noted his ability to seamlessly transition between the Romantic giants Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, as well as his exceptional versatility in interpreting earlier composers. His performances are characterized by a light touch, elegant phrasing, and a deep understanding of the intricacies of each composition.
