In February 2009, Kim made his World Cup debut in Whistler, Canada. Competing in a two-man bobsleigh, he finished 26th. Shortly after, he made his World Championship debut in Lake Placid, USA, placing 30th in the two-man event. Notably, he also secured a bronze medal at the North American Cup that season.
