Early Life and Education

Jannelle Monáe Rolle was born in Orange, New Jersey, to a family of artists. She attended St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island, and later graduated from Smith College in 2012 with a degree in art history, Africana studies, and museum studies.

Career

Black Contemporary Art Blog

In 2011, while still a college student, Rolle launched the Black Contemporary Art blog on Tumblr. The blog aimed to highlight Black artists and their work, which was often underrepresented in mainstream art spaces.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

In 2015, Rolle joined the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as an associate producer for the online community. She held this position until 2019.

Art and Activism

Rolle is known for her advocacy for racial equality in the art world. She has spoken about the importance of linking art with activism and protests, especially in the wake of high-profile killings of Black Americans.

Other Projects

In 2016, Rolle curated the White House Instagram account during the South by South Lawn festival. She also co-founded the Black Art Incubator project and modeled in the Chromat Spring/Summer 2019 fashion show.

Books

"Black Futures" Anthology

In collaboration with journalist Jenna Wortham, Rolle co-edited and published the anthology "Black Futures." The collective book includes contributions from over 100 Black writers and artists, exploring the multifaceted experiences of Black life.

"This Is What I Know About Art"

In 2020, Rolle released her debut book, "This Is What I Know About Art," a children's book published by Penguin Workshop.

Personal Life

Rolle is a lesbian and lives in Brooklyn with her partner, Chase Strangio, a civil rights lawyer.
