Kirk Alyn: The First Superman on Screen
Kirk Alyn, an American actor, is famous for being the first to portray Superman on screen. His real name was John Feggo Jr. and he was born on October 8, 1910, in Oxford, New Jersey, to Hungarian immigrants. Alyn attended Columbia University after completing high school. He began his acting career by singing and dancing in vaudeville shows and later appeared in Broadway productions in the 1930s.

Early Film Career
In 1930, Alyn made his first film appearance as an extra. In 1934, he had a small role in the romantic musical comedy "Private Lessons" under the name Jack Fago. However, it was not until 1942 that he actively started pursuing a career in film. Out of the 28 movies he appeared in during his six-year career, his name was only mentioned in the credits for 10 of them.

The Breakthrough as Superman
In 1948, Alyn's career took a major turn when he was offered the role of Superman in the first film adaptation of the comic book series. The black and white film serial consisted of 15 short episodes with a total duration of 244 minutes. Each episode was shown weekly in theaters before the main feature film. Alyn's portrayal of Superman resembled the character from the comics, with a chiseled face and a curl of black hair on his forehead. The serial depicted Superman's arrival on Earth, his disguise as the mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, his introduction to Lois Lane, and his battle against the supervillain Spider Lady.
Limited Success and Retirement
Despite his role as Superman, Alyn did not achieve the level of stardom he had hoped for. He continued to receive small television roles for some time and then disappeared from the public eye, reportedly moving to Arizona. In 1974, he published his autobiography, "A Job for Superman."
A Brief Return and Later Life
After a ten-year hiatus, Alyn briefly returned to the big screen. He appeared in a small role as Dr. Sam Lane, Lois Lane's father, in the 1978 film "Superman," which starred Christopher Reeve. In 1979, he appeared in an episode of the cult TV series "Battlestar Galactica" and had a minor role in the parody comedy "Superbman: The Other Movie" in 1981. His last role was as Professor Machen in the horror film "Scalps." Alyn passed away on March 14, 1999, at the age of 88 in Woodlands, Texas.
Personal Life
In 1942, Alyn married actress Virginia O'Brien, known for her beauty, impassive facial expression, and monotone voice. They had two daughters and a son together, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1955. This was Alyn's only marriage, while it was O'Brien's second out of three.
