Biography of Colin Greenwood

Colin Greenwood, also known as Coz, was born on June 26, 1969, in Oxford. He is a musician and the bassist of the British rock band Radiohead. Colin's older brother, Johnny Greenwood, is also a member of the band.

Early Life and Musical Influences

Colin spent part of his childhood in Germany, where his father served in the military. As a result, he is fluent in both German and English. Colin credits his younger sister Susan for introducing him to music. They listened to bands like The Fall, Magazine, and Joy Division, which made them unpopular at school where everyone else was into Iron Maiden.

Formation of Radiohead

At the age of 12, Colin met Tom Yorke, who would later become a fellow member of Radiohead. They attended Abingdon School together, where they also met Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway, who would go on to form the band with them. In 1986, they created a group called On a Friday, named after their practice sessions on Fridays. Their first performance as a band took place at the Jericho Tavern pub in Oxford.

Education and Professional Career

Colin initially started playing keyboards but later switched to guitar. After finishing school, he attended Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he studied English and American literature. During this time, Colin also organized parties and arranged for On a Friday to perform in Cambridge.

After college, Colin worked at the music store Our Price, where he had an encounter that changed his life. He gave a demo tape of the band to a recording studio agent named Keith Wozencroft, insisting that they should be signed. This led to the band's contract with EMI, and they eventually changed their name to Radiohead.

Musical Career and Personal Life

Colin Greenwood is known for his role as the bass guitarist in Radiohead. However, he also plays keyboards, synthesizers, and some percussion instruments. He cites Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield as major influences on his style.

In 2003, Colin collaborated with his brother Johnny on his solo album, providing bass for the track "24 Hour Charleston."

In December 1998, Colin married Molly McGrann, an American writer and critic. They have two sons together, Jesse and Asa. Today, Colin lives with his family in a small village in Oxfordshire and continues to be an active member of Radiohead.
