Kostas Koliyannis: A Dedicated Communist Leader
Early Life and Political AffiliationKostas Koliyannis was a prominent figure in Greek politics, serving as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) from 1961 to 1972. A lawyer by profession, he became a member of the KKE in 1931, embarking on a lifelong journey of political activism.
Initial Political Engagements
In the early 1930s, Koliyannis held key positions within the KKE, including membership in the party's regional committee in Fives (1932-1935) and the role of secretary (1934-1935). However, his political aspirations were interrupted by exile in 1935 and 1936-1943. Undeterred, he managed to escape and resume his political activities.
Involvement in the Greek Resistance
During World War II, Koliyannis played a vital role in the Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS), engaging in political work and contributing to the resistance efforts against the Axis powers. After the war, he held various leadership positions in the KKE, including secretary of the regional committees of Evia, Epirus, and Central Greece (1945-1947).
Rise to Leadership
Koliyannis became a candidate member of the KKE's Central Committee in 1945, progressing to full membership in 1948. He also served as a candidate member of the Politburo (1950-1952) and a full member from 1952 to 1974. On October 24, 1961, Koliyannis participated in the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, demonstrating his international stature within the communist movement.
