Early Life and Education
Yegor Fyodorovich Bradtke von was born in 1796. He attended the St. Petersburg School of Topographers and received guidance from the Muraviev brothers.
Military and Administrative Career
Bradtke was dispatched to Finland for land surveying work, where he taught mathematics and military science to his colleagues. He served in the administration of military settlements under Arakcheev and Kleinmichel, and participated in suppressing the Polish uprising in 1831.
Appointment as Trustee of Kyiv Educational District (1832)
Bradtke was appointed Trustee of the Kyiv Educational District despite his reluctance in 1832. He gained respect for his humane treatment of students and dedication to education.
Establishment of Kyiv University (1834)
On July 15, 1834, Bradtke inaugurated Kyiv University, intended to counter Polish influence and promote Russification. However, accusations of revolutionary propaganda among students (exaggerated by authorities) led to its temporary closure, with Bradtke becoming a member of the Central Administration of Schools (1839).
Service in the Ministry of State Assets
Bradtke joined the Ministry of State Assets as Director of a department, where he implemented cadastral reforms, evaluated state properties, replaced capitation tax with land tax, and established various institutions under the ministry.
Later Career
In 1844, Bradtke was appointed Senator. He conducted an audit of the Kharkiv Governorate in 1851, before serving as Trustee of the Derpt District (1854-1862). He defended the university against reactionary influences.
Chairmanship of University Statute Commission (1861)
Bradtke chaired a commission to draft a new university statute in 1861. The commission's recommendations formed the basis of the 1863 statute.
Autobiography and Legacy
Bradtke's autobiography, translated into Russian and published in "Russian Archive," reveals his noble character. The original German text was also published.
