Biography of Kristen Marie Pfaff
Early Life and EducationKristen Marie Pfaff, the bass guitarist of the American punk-pop band 'Hole', was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. She spent some time in Europe before attending Boston College and later the University of Minnesota. During her time at university, Kristen studied piano and cello. After completing her education, she settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she first tried playing the bass guitar.
Janitor Joe and 'Hole'
Kristen Pfaff, along with guitarist Joachim Breuer and drummer Matt Entsminger, formed the band 'Janitor Joe'. In 1992, their first single 'Hmong' was released under 'OXO Records' logo, and later that year, the band signed with 'Amphetamine Reptile Records'. The growing Minneapolis scene attracted more attention, and 'Janitor Joe' started touring nationally. It was during one of these tours that Kristen met Eric Erlandson and Courtney Love, who were looking for a new bassist for their band 'Hole'. Love invited Kristen to join them, but she initially declined and returned to Minneapolis. However, Love and Erlandson persisted and eventually convinced Kristen to join 'Hole'. By that time, 'Hole' had already signed a contract with 'Geffen Records' and gained a large fan base.
'Live Through This' and Personal Struggles
In 1993, Kristen moved to Seattle, Washington, to join the rest of the 'Hole' members in working on their album 'Live Through This'. During this time, Kristen developed a close friendship with Love, Erlandson, and Kurt Cobain. While working on the album, Kristen and Eric Erlandson started dating, but their relationship didn't last long. Despite their breakup, they remained close friends. Unfortunately, Kristen also developed a drug addiction during this time, which worsened after she became estranged from her friends in Minneapolis.
Tragic Death
In the winter of 1993, Kristen began treatment for her drug addiction. In the spring of 1994, she spent time on tour with 'Janitor Joe' instead of 'Hole'. After returning from the tour, Kristen made the decision to quit drugs for good. Sadly, soon after her return, Kurt Cobain died by suicide. Devastated by his death, Kristen decided to leave Seattle and 'Hole' and return to Minneapolis permanently. On June 16, 1994, at 9:30 am, Kristen's friend Paul Erickson found her dead on the floor of her Seattle apartment. There were drug paraphernalia and syringes nearby. Kristen had died from a drug overdose.
Legacy
Kristen Pfaff was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in her hometown of Buffalo, New York. Friends and family described her as a vibrant, talented individual who always had control over her life, except for that one fateful night when she lost it all.
