Blessed Michał Tomaszek, Franciscan Martyr
Early Life and VocationMichał Tomaszek was born in 1909 and completed his secondary education in Lviv. Inspired by his faith, he joined the Franciscan Order as a novice and took the name Krustyń in 1927. He received his religious vows that same year.
Priestly Formation and Service
Tomaszek studied at the Major Seminary in Przemyśl and was ordained to the priesthood on June 21, 1936. He served as a vicar and confessor in the monastery of Włocławek for several years.
Arrest and Imprisonment
With the outbreak of World War II, Tomaszek was arrested by the Gestapo on August 26, 1940. He was interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and later transferred to Dachau. His prisoner number was 22779.
Martyrdom and Beatification
Tomaszek endured unimaginable hardships in the concentration camps. Despite his suffering, he remained steadfast in his faith and provided spiritual support to his fellow prisoners. He was executed on June 23, 1943.
On June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Tomaszek and 107 other Polish martyrs of World War II. His feast day is celebrated on June 12.
