Kurt Wagner: A Distinguished GDR General and Politician

Early Life and Education

Kurt Wagner was born in 1911 and received his primary education from 1919 to 1922. He then pursued trade school before becoming an electrician. Wagner experienced various jobs and faced unemployment during this period.

Imprisonment and Liberation

On March 28, 1935, Wagner was arrested for alleged treason and sentenced to ten years in prison. He served his sentence at Saxony's largest penal facility until his liberation on April 24, 1945, by the American army.

Post-War Career

After the liberation of Chemnitz, Wagner was appointed head of the city's criminal police in May 1945. In 1949, he embarked on a training program in the Soviet Union. From 1950 to 1952, he held various command positions in the armed forces.

Military Leadership

In 1955, Wagner began studies at the Military Academy of General Staff in the USSR. He commanded the 3rd Military District from 1957 to 1959, rising to the rank of Major General. From 1959 to 1967, he served as Deputy Minister of National Defense, overseeing combat training. In 1966, he was promoted to Colonel General.

Post-retirement

Wagner retired from active duty in 1967 and spent his remaining years in Straußberg. His legacy as a prominent military and political figure in the German Democratic Republic continues to be recognized.
