Ludovik Odor: From Economist to Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationLudovik Odor was born on July 2, 1976, in Komárno, Czechoslovakia. As an ethnic Hungarian, his native language is Hungarian. In 1999, he earned a Master's degree in mathematics and management from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Comenius University in Bratislava.
Financial Career
After graduating, Odor worked as a financial market analyst at the Czechoslovak Commercial Bank from 1999 to 2001. He then became an economist at the Slovak Rating Agency. In 2003, he joined the state administration as chief economist in the Ministry of Finance and director of the Institute for Fiscal Policy.
National Bank and Government Positions
In 2006, Odor became a member of the banking council of the National Bank of Slovakia and executive director for research. From 2010 to 2012, he served as an advisor to Prime Minister Iveta Radičová and Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš.
Non-Profit Activities
Odor has co-founded several non-profits, including the Institute for Fiscal Policy, the Fiscal Responsibility Council, and the Value for Money Unit. He has contributed to the introduction of a flat tax, public finance management reforms, the euro adoption strategy, a debt brake law, and reforms of the first and second pillars of the pension system.
Academic and Literary Contributions
Odor has been a guest professor at the Central European University since 2016. He has also authored several books on economics, including "Economics at First Glance," "Crisisnomics at First Glance," and "Investing at First Glance."
Ascendancy to Prime Minister
On May 7, 2023, Prime Minister Eduard Heger resigned. On May 15, President Zuzana Čaputová appointed Odor as Prime Minister of Slovakia, and upon his proposal, the members of his government.
Domestic Policy
Odor's website states that he believes in pragmatism and evidence-based economics.
