Early Life and Education

Lars-Emil Johansen was born in Illorsuit, Greenland, in 1946. He completed his education as a teacher in 1970 and was elected to the Greenland Council the following year.

Political Career

Local and Regional Politics

Before the establishment of the Greenlandic Parliament (Landsting) in 1979, Johansen represented Greenland in the Danish Parliament from 1973. In 1987, he became the chairman of the Siumut political party ("Forward"), a position he held until 1997.

Prime Minister of Greenland

Johansen served as the second Prime Minister of Greenland from 1991 to 1997. During his tenure, he led the Siumut party to electoral victories and oversaw significant political and economic developments in Greenland.

National Politics

In 2001, Johansen was re-elected to the Danish Parliament as one of the island's two representatives. He has held this position continuously since.

Awards and Honors

Johansen has been recognized for his contributions to Greenland and international relations. He has received the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, the Norwegian Order of Merit, and both the silver and gold Nersornaat Medals (Greenland Medal of Merit).
