Biography of Lee Boyd Malvo

Lee Boyd Malvo is a convicted serial killer responsible for a series of murders in the Washington, D.C. metro area in October 2002. Malvo admitted to planning to kill six people a day for an entire month in order to "terrorize the nation." However, it later became clear that these attacks were just the culmination of a series of attacks across the United States that began on the West Coast.

Involvement with Terrorism

Malvo was involved in criminal activities with John Allen Muhammad, who is believed to have initiated him into world terrorism. However, the exact motives of the young killer were never fully deciphered by the police. One popular theory suggests that Malvo was financially motivated, as Muhammad allegedly promised him $10 million in ransom from the U.S. government for ending the killings. The money was supposed to be used to create a utopian society for 140 homeless white children in Canada.

Meeting John Allen Muhammad

Malvo first met John Allen Muhammad in 1999 while vacationing with his mother, Una Sceon James, in Antigua and Barbuda. James became friends with Muhammad, but it was Muhammad's relationship with Malvo that grew stronger. Eventually, Malvo's mother left him with Muhammad and fled to Florida with fake documents. Malvo followed her in 2001.

Life with John Allen Muhammad

In December, Una and Lee were arrested by border patrol agents, but Malvo was released in January 2002. Shortly after his release, he reunited with Muhammad. They moved to Bellingham, Washington, where they lived together at a homeless shelter. Malvo also attended a local school, where it was believed that Muhammad was his father. It was in Bellingham that Malvo acquired a stolen Bushmaster XM-15 rifle from a local gun store, which his "father" taught him how to shoot.

Spree of Killings

Malvo's first victim was John Gaeta, whom he shot on August 1, 2002. Gaeta survived, but many others were not as fortunate. In total, Malvo injured six people and killed eleven. After his arrest, Malvo faced two main charges: the murder of FBI analyst Linda Franklin during a terrorist act and multiple counts of murder within a three-year period.

Conviction and Imprisonment

On December 18, 2003, after 14 hours of deliberation, the jury found Malvo guilty on both counts. On December 23, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In March 2004, an additional eight years were added to his sentence for illegal possession of a firearm. There were rumors that Malvo, despite his young age, could face the death penalty, but this idea was later abandoned, although not entirely. Malvo could still be executed if he is extradited to a state where his age at the time of arrest does not protect him from the death penalty. Currently, Lee Boyd Malvo is serving his sentence at the Red Onion State Prison. He has reached out to some of his victims, apologizing to Cheryll Witz over the phone on October 2, 2007, and sending a letter of apology to his first victim, John Gaeta, on February 21.
