Early Career and Transfer to Wigan Athletic
Jordan Henderson is an English professional footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Liverpool. Born on June 17, 1990, in Sunderland, England, he began his football career with Sunderland at the age of 8.
In 2005, Henderson moved to Middlesbrough, where he spent three seasons in the Premier League. In January 2008, he signed a contract with Wigan Athletic for a fee of £3.5 million. He quickly became a key player for Wigan, making his debut in the first match of the 2008-09 season against West Ham United.
Goal-Scoring Debut and Success with Wigan
Henderson scored his first goal for Wigan in a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers, a match that resulted in the resignation of Blackburn's manager, Paul Ince. His impressive performances for Wigan earned him recognition, and he was named to the England under-21 team in 2009.
Transfer to Sunderland and Captaincy
In August 2009, Henderson signed a four-year contract with Sunderland for a fee of £6 million. The move was driven in part by the appointment of Steve Bruce as Sunderland's manager, who had previously coached Henderson at Wigan. Henderson made his Sunderland debut in a 1-0 victory over Bolton, earning the man of the match award.
In August 2010, Henderson was named the club captain. Under his leadership, Sunderland enjoyed a successful period, reaching the League Cup and FA Cup finals in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Henderson's contributions were recognized with his selection to the PFA Team of the Year twice.
