Early Life and Playing Career
Nickname: "The Cannon"Erik Mombaerts was born in the Dutch city of Breda. He began his football career as a striker for his hometown club, NAC Breda, where he spent his entire career until retiring in 1963. Known for his powerful shot, he earned the nickname "het kanoon" (Dutch for "the cannon").
Mombaerts became the Dutch league's top scorer in the 1957/58 and 1958/59 seasons, scoring an impressive 32 goals in 29 games and 33 goals in 32 matches, respectively. By the end of his playing career, he had scored 114 goals in 149 appearances.
Coaching Career
Belgian Success and Conflict in BrugesAfter retiring as a player, Mombaerts embarked on a coaching career. After an unsuccessful stint as head coach of his former club NAC Breda, he joined Belgian club Club Brugge in 1971. Mombaerts led Brugge to its first national championship title in 53 years in the 1972/73 season. However, conflicts with the club's board led to his resignation.
Return to Bruges and Further Success
In 1979, Mombaerts returned to Bruges to coach Cercle Brugge K.S.V. Three years later, he moved to KV Mechelen, which he successfully promoted to the first division of the Belgian league. Mombaerts continued to coach various second-tier clubs in Belgium before ending his coaching career with FC Boom in 1990.
