Early Life and Education
Academician Leonid Vasilyevich Poluyektovwas born on March 30, 1927, in the Russian city of Serov. He graduated from a vocational school in 1941 and worked as a milling machine operator during the Great Patriotic War. In 1947, he obtained a high school diploma and enrolled in the medical faculty of Sverdlovsk State Medical Institute.
Surgical Career
After graduating from medical school, Poluyektov was appointed as a surgeon at the Tyumen Regional Hospital in 1956. In 1961, he became an assistant professor and, a year later, an associate professor in the Department of Faculty Surgery at Omsk Medical Institute. From 1966 to 1997, he served as the Head of this department.
Scientific Achievements
Poluyektov's research focused primarily on surgical gastroenterology, including the pathogenesis of dumping syndrome, gastric and duodenal ulcer disease, and cancer of the operated stomach. He made significant contributions to the field of reconstructive surgery on the stomach and esophagus using stapling devices.
Innovation and Discoveries
Poluyektov was an innovative surgeon who pioneered the use of cryodestruction and laser coagulation for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. He also conducted groundbreaking research on the use of hemosorbents to detoxify the body in cases of septic shock and peritonitis.
Academic and Administrative Leadership
In 1974, Poluyektov was appointed as the Rector of Omsk Medical Institute, a position he held until 1998. Under his leadership, the medical school expanded and gained national recognition. From 1998 onwards, he served as a professor and advisor to the Rector of Omsk Medical Academy.
Honors and Recognition
Poluyektov was elected as a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (AMN СССР) in 1980 and as an Academician in 1986. He was also a member of the Russian National Surgical Society and the World Association of Surgeons. In 1995, he became an Honorary Professor of Omsk Medical Academy.
Legacy
Poluyektov is revered as the founder of the surgical school in Omsk. He authored over 400 scientific publications, including 8 monographs. Under his guidance, 8 doctoral and 37 candidate dissertations were defended. His contributions to the field of surgery have had a lasting impact on the lives of countless patients.
