Early Career and Studies in Medicine

Italian anatomist Leopoldo Marc'Antonio Caldani began his medical career in 1755 when he became a professor of medicine in Bologna. He subsequently studied under celebrated anatomist Giovanni Battista Morgagni, returning to Bologna in 1760.

Professorship and Relocation to Padua

Caldani's reputation grew with his research on irritability, published in Bologna in 1757. He relocated to Venice and eventually to Padua, where he was invited as a professor of theoretical medicine.

Anatomical Illustrations and Explanations

Caldani's most significant contributions to anatomy lie in his renowned work, "Icones anatomicae." Published in four volumes between 1801 and 1814, this collection of anatomical illustrations was accompanied by an equally impressive five-volume commentary, "Explicatio iconum anatomicarum." These works were published in collaboration with his nephew, Floriano Caldani.

Other Scholarly Contributions

In addition to his anatomical pursuits, Caldani authored several textbooks covering various medical disciplines, including pathology, anatomy, physiology, and semiotics. These works demonstrated his broad knowledge and sought to advance medical education.
