Lawrence Skantze: Military and Intelligence Leader
Early Life and EducationLawrence Skantze was a prominent American military officer and political figure. He was born in 1923 and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1954.
Military Career
Skantze's military career began in 1946 when he joined the Strategic Air Command's 7th Bombardment Group at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. He commanded B-29 and B-36 bombers during his time there. From 1954 to 1957, he served as a researcher at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico.
His expertise in nuclear weapons led him to positions as a scientific advisor at Kirtland Air Force Base from 1957 to 1961 and then within the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1965. He served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations in the Department of the Air Force from 1965 to 1968.
In 1968, Skantze became the Deputy Director of the Space Systems Division within the Department of Defense, and in 1969, he was promoted to Director. He later held the position of Assistant Chief of Staff and Chief of Programs and Resources in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1970 to 1973.
Intelligence and Foreign Service
In 1973, Skantze was appointed as the Central Intelligence Agency's representative in Washington, D.C. He then served as the Director of the National Security Agency from 1973 to 1977.
Post-retirement
After retiring from the military in 1982, Skantze became the Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 1978 to 1990. He also served on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB) from 1993 to 1995.
