Early Life and Education

Lloyd James Austin III was born on August 8, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama. He grew up in Thomasville, Georgia. In June 1975, Austin graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor's degree. Later, he earned a Master's degree in Education from Auburn University and an MBA from Webster University.

Military Career

After graduating from West Point, Austin was commissioned as a Lieutenant. His first assignment was with the 3rd (Mechanized) Infantry Division in Germany, where he served in the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment as a Rifle Platoon Leader and a Reconnaissance Platoon Leader.

Austin served in various positions, including:

In 2003, Austin led the 3rd Infantry Division into Iraq. He served as Commander of the 10th Mountain Division and Commanding General, Combined Joint Task Force-180, during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005.

On December 7, 2020, Austin was nominated to be the Secretary of Defense in President-elect Joe Biden's cabinet. On January 22, 2021, the U.S. Senate confirmed his nomination.
