Jean-Louis de Cormontaigne was a renowned French engineer and a leading theorist in the field of fortification. He is most notable for introducing the concept of "fortress evaluation" or "fortress analysis."

Cormontaigne developed a method for assessing the strength of fortresses. He determined the number of days that a fortress, constructed using a known system, could withstand a standardized attack. This period was referred to as the "absolute strength of the fortification system."
Influence and Legacy
Cormontaigne's ideas were highly influential in France. His theories were considered state secrets and were not published widely. Nonetheless, his work had a significant impact on fortress design and warfare strategies.
Later Life and Career
Cormontaigne rose to the rank of Major General and became the superintendent of fortresses. He passed away on October 20, 1752, in Lorraine.
Publication of His Work
After Cormontaigne's death, his writings were posthumously published by Baron Pierre Joseph Gabriel Bayard in a three-volume work titled "Oeuvres posthumes de Cormontaigne" (Paris, 1806-1809). This publication played a crucial role in disseminating his ideas and solidifying his legacy as a leading fortification theorist.
