Early Life and Education

Alexandre-Guillaume-Pierre Cotte was born in France and entered the Oratorian religious order at the age of 18. He served as a professor of philosophy and theology at the Oratorian lyceum in Montmorency.

Meteorological and Agricultural Studies

Cotte's investigations into the quality of water in Enghien in 1769 earned him recognition as a corresponding member of the French Academy of Sciences. In 1780, he received a gold medal from the Royal Medical Society for his contributions to meteorology.

Renouncement and Later Life

During the anti-religious revolutionary terror of 1794, Cotte renounced his priestly status. He spent the remainder of his life in Paris, dedicating himself to using meteorology to advance agricultural practices.

Agricultural Expertise

Cotte's extensive research focused on the impact of varying soil conditions on crop yields, particularly wheat. His notable works include:
