Early Life and Education
Luigi Lodovico Pasinettiwas born on September 12, 1930, in Zanica, Italy. He studied economics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, graduating in 1954. His thesis examined econometric models in business cycle analysis.
Pasinetti was an exceptional student, winning scholarships that enabled him to study at Cambridge University (1956, 1958), Harvard University (1957), and Oxford University (1959). In 1960, he received a research grant from Nuffield College, Oxford, which he held until 1962. At Oxford, he became acquainted with Richard Kahn, a prominent economist who later invited him to Cambridge.
Cambridge Years
In 1962, Pasinetti arrived at Cambridge, which was a stronghold of Keynesian economics. He became a Fellow of King's College in 1960-1961. In 1973, he was appointed Reader in Economics, a senior teaching position, at Cambridge. However, in 1976, he returned to the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore as Professor of Econometrics.
Contributions to Economic Theory
Pasinetti made significant contributions to economic theory, particularly in the following areas:
- Neo-Ricardian economics: Developed an analytical framework for neo-Ricardian theory, including value and distribution theory.
- Kaldorian growth theory: Contributed to Nicholas Kaldor's theory of economic growth and income distribution.
- Structural change and economic growth: Developed a theory of structural change, economic growth, structural economic dynamics, and uneven sectoral development.
Academic Career
In 1981, Pasinetti became Professor of Economic Analysis at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. He continued to travel between Cambridge and Milan, holding visiting professorships at Columbia University (1971, 1975) and the Indian Statistical Institute and Delhi School of Economics (1979).
At his alma mater in Milan, Pasinetti held various leadership positions: Chairman of the Economics Department (1980-1983), Director of the Faculty of Economics (1983-1986), and Director of the Joint Ph.D. Program in Economics (1984-1986, 1995-1998).
