Biography of Lydia Petrovna Tseraskaya

Lydia Petrovna Tseraskaya, an outstanding Russian and Soviet astronomer, was born on June 23, 1855, in Astrakhan. She pursued a career in teaching after completing her education at the Women's Pedagogical Courses in St. Petersburg. From 1875 to 1916, she worked as a French language teacher.

Marriage and Collaborative Research

After marrying the renowned astronomer Vitold Karlovich Tserasky, Lydia shared her husband's passion for science and, starting from 1898, joined him in the search for new variable stars. Lydia Tseraskaya's name is closely associated with the Moscow Observatory, where she worked. Today, the observatory is known as the P.K. Sternberg State Astronomical Institute.

Discoveries and Recognition

Lydia Petrovna was a pioneer in the discovery of 219 variable stars, dedicating more than 25 years of her life to this pursuit. She conducted her search for variable stars by comparing photographs of different sections of the night sky. In 1908, her scientific work in this field was recognized with a prize from the Russian Astronomical Society.

Legacy and Passing

Lydia Petrovna Tseraskaya passed away on December 22, 1931, while on a trip to her hometown of Astrakhan. She was laid to rest in Moscow at the Vagankovo Cemetery, next to her husband.
