Education and Career
Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus completed her high school education at Miguel de Cervantes Bilingual High School in Warsaw. She pursued sociology at the University of Granada and the Complutense University of Madrid, and additionally graduated from the School of Social Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Scheuring-Wielgus specialized in translating Spanish-language literature.
Nonprofit Involvement
Scheuring-Wielgus has been actively associated with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, the Stefan Batory Foundation, and the Shipyard Foundation – Laboratory for Social Research and Innovations. At the Shipyard Foundation, she held the position of Research and Consulting Director. Her commitment to social justice extended to volunteering with individuals experiencing homelessness.
Political Engagement
In 2015, Scheuring-Wielgus joined the Together party (later renamed Left Together in 2019) and served on the Warsaw district board. She ran for office in the 2018 municipal elections as part of Jan Śpiewak's Warsaw Will Win electoral committee, garnering 147 votes. In the 2019 European Parliament elections, Scheuring-Wielgus was a candidate on the Left Together coalition ticket in the 4th constituency, receiving 616 votes but falling short of securing a seat.
Her political breakthrough came in the 2019 parliamentary elections when she was elected to the Sejm (lower house of the Polish parliament) on the Democratic Left Alliance list from the Warsaw constituency. She received 19,501 votes and became a member of the Sejm Commission for Social Policy and Family Affairs. Within her party's parliamentary faction, she assumed the role of Vice-Chair of the Left.
Personal Life
Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus resides in Warsaw's Praga district. She is married and has two children. She identifies as a vegetarian.
