Early Life and Education

Makhmut Mukanov was born in 1929 as the son of renowned writer Sabit Mukanov. His academic journey began with studies at the historical faculty of Moscow State University from 1949 to 1952. He subsequently transferred to the historical faculty at Kazakhstan State University in Almaty-Ata, graduating in 1954.

Academic Career at the Institute of History and Ethnography

Makhmut Mukanov's academic life was closely intertwined with the Institute of History and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan. He joined the institute as a junior researcher and gradually ascended to the position of Head of the Ethnology Department. This tenure spanned from 1958 to 1968 and from 1970 to 1998.

Doctoral Dissertations

Mukanov's research focused on the history and ethnography of Kazakhstan. In 1972, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on "Ethnic Composition and Settlement of the Middle Juz Kazakhs." His subsequent doctoral dissertation, "Kazakh Women's Artistic Crafts: A Historical and Ethnographic Study," was completed in 1989.
