Biography of Marat Sultanov

Marat Abdyrasakovych Sultanov was born on December 5, 1960, in Frunze, Kyrgyzstan. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISIS) in 1983, majoring in materials science and semiconductor technology. After graduation, Sultanov worked as a junior research scholar at the department of semiconductor materials.

In 1987, Sultanov started his career as a junior lecturer at the Kyrgyz National University and later became an associate professor. In 1992, he became the head of a department and then served as the acting deputy chairman of the board and later as the deputy chairman of the board of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. In 1994, Sultanov assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of the National Bank.

In 1998, Sultanov was appointed as the Minister of Finance of Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, he held the position of Chairman of the Central Treasury of Kyrgyzstan. In 2000, he was elected as a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh (the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan) and became the chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee. He also led the parliamentary group "El uchun" ("Power of the People").

In March 2005, Sultanov was elected as a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh of the third convocation. On March 2, 2006, Sultanov was elected as the Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament. Prior to his election, there were speculations in the media about his candidacy. Sultanov emphasized his centrist platform, although he was known as a supporter and fellow countryman of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. According to the "Nezavisimaya Gazeta", he was seen as a figure capable of finding a compromise with the presidential team. Several publications noted that Sultanov had previously stated that he had no intention of running for the position of the Speaker.

In 2006, the media referred to Sultanov as the co-chairman of the political council of the Republican Party of Kyrgyzstan "Adilet". Sultanov has been awarded the rank of State Counselor of the Second Class. He is the author of more than 50 scientific works in the field of semiconductor physics and has received state awards.
