Early Life and Education
Marcy Kaptur is an American politician who has represented Ohio's 11th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives since 2008. Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she earned a bachelor's degree in business from Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1983.
Legal and Political Career
Kaptur began her career as an attorney in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, where she specialized in financial crimes. She also served as an auditor for the county's real estate tax department and as a part-time judge.
In 1996, Kaptur became president of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority's chapter at Howard University, one of the oldest African American sororities in the United States. She served in this role until 2000.
Mayor of Warrensville Heights
From 2000 to 2008, Kaptur made history as the first woman and first African American to serve as mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio. During her tenure, she focused on economic development and community revitalization.
US House of Representatives
Kaptur was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2008 and has served continuously since then. She has held various leadership positions, including Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. She also serves on several House committees, including the Appropriations Committee, the Agriculture Committee, the Education and Labor Committee, and the House Administration Committee, where she previously chaired the Subcommittee on Elections.
Possible Cabinet Appointment
In 2020, Kaptur was considered as a potential candidate for the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in President-elect Joe Biden's administration. If appointed, she would have been the second African American woman to hold this office, following Patricia Harris under President Jimmy Carter.
