Marco Biagianti: The Catania Legend
Early CareerMarco Biagianti was born in Florence, Italy, and grew up supporting Fiorentina. He joined the club's youth academy and spent several years honing his skills. In 2003, he was loaned out to Serie C2 side Fano, where he made 30 appearances.
Professional Debut
In 2004, Biagianti was loaned to Serie C1 club Chieti. He played 27 matches, scoring one goal. After appearing in one game for Chieti in the 2005/06 season, he joined Pro Vasto, where he played for a year and a half. During his time there, he suffered a serious thigh muscle strain.
Catania Breakthrough
In January 2007, Biagianti signed for Catania. He made his Serie A debut on April 7, 2007, against Roma in a 0-2 loss. He played one more game for the club that season, in a 2-0 victory over Chievo. In the 2007/08 season, he became a more regular starter, appearing in 18 matches.
National Team Interest
Biagianti's impressive performances for Catania caught the attention of the Italian national team. In May 2009, he was called up for a friendly against Northern Ireland but did not play. Coach Roberto Lo Florio expressed surprise that Biagianti was not selected for subsequent squads.
Continued Success with Catania
Biagianti became an integral part of the Catania midfield under manager Walter Zenga during the 2008/09 season, playing in 34 out of 38 league matches. Despite interest from clubs such as Genoa, Fiorentina, and Palermo, Biagianti extended his contract with Catania until 2014.
Staying Loyal to Catania
In the summer of 2010, Biagianti reaffirmed his commitment to Catania, saying, "I feel ready to start a new adventure with this team. Of course, I dream of playing for the national team, but Catania comes first."
Retirement and Post-Playing Career
Biagianti retired from football in 2019 after a successful 17-year career. He remained involved in the game, working as a youth coach for Fiorentina and later as the sporting director of his hometown club, Sangiovannese.
