Background and Activism
Early Life and Political RootsMairek Borowski was born in Warsaw on January 4, 1946. In his family home, where his father held staunch communist beliefs, political discussions were commonplace. As a schoolboy, he joined the Union of Polish Socialist Youth.
University and Protest
Borowski's academic journey began at the prestigious Higher School of Planning and Statistics, where he pursued a degree in foreign trade. However, in March 1968, his activism against police interference in student life led to his swift expulsion from both the university and the ruling Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR).
Professional and Political Career
Business and Return to PoliticsUndeterred by his exclusion, Borowski found employment as a jeans vendor at the "Junior" department store in Warsaw. He later rejoined the PZPR, remaining a member until its dissolution in 1990 with the triumph of Solidarity under Lech Wallesa.
Leadership in the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD)
Borowski played a pivotal role in establishing the SLD. From 1993 to 1994, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. In February 1996, he became Deputy Marshal of the Sejm.
Achievements as Marshal of the Sejm
Following the SLD's victory in the October parliamentary elections, Borowski was elected Marshal of the Sejm, the third-highest position in the Polish state hierarchy.

Family and HobbiesMarried with a son, Borowski enjoys reading works by Stanislaw Lem, listening to classical music, and solving puzzles. He is also an avid participant in bowling, volleyball, and soccer.
