Early Life and Education
Vojislav Šešelj, a Yugoslav Serbian politician, was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He completed his law degree at the University of Sarajevo and earned his doctorate in law from the University of Belgrade, making him the youngest doctor of law in the country at the time.
Political Career
In 1981, Šešelj was expelled from the League of Communists of Yugoslavia for his criticism of the regime led by Marshal Tito. Three years later, he was imprisoned for nearly two years for his political activities. In 1991, he founded the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), which became a prominent nationalist political force in Serbia.
International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
In 2003, Šešelj voluntarily surrendered to the ICTY in The Hague to face charges of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity committed during the Balkan wars in the 1990s. He denied the charges and opted to represent himself in his defense. The trial began in 2007 and concluded in 2018.
Conviction and Imprisonment
In 2018, Šešelj was convicted by the ICTY of nine counts of war crimes and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The charges included persecution, cruel treatment, and wanton destruction of property. He appealed the conviction, but the appeal was rejected in 2019.
