Hungarian-American Music Educator
Erzsébet Szőnyi (1875–1941) was a pioneering Hungarian-American music educator. Despite graduating from the Budapest Academy of Music as a pianist in 1897, she quickly transitioned to a pedagogical career.
Teaching and Influence
Szőnyi primarily taught privately, with a brief tenure at the Budapest Academy of Music from 1918 to 1920. Her pedagogical approach was outlined in her influential book "Piano Teaching and Musical Education" (1921), which was later translated into German as "Der lebendige Klavierunterricht" (1929).
Immigration and Legacy
In 1938, Szőnyi emigrated to the United States. She taught at Roosevelt University in Chicago and authored articles about the works of Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, and Leo Weiner (with whom she corresponded). Additionally, she edited an edition of Josef Haydn's piano sonatas.
