Queen Margrethe II of Denmark: Biography
Queen Margrethe II has been the Queen of Denmark since January 14, 1972, and is the head of state. She carries the Icelandic letter "ð" in one of her names because Iceland was part of the Danish kingdom at the time of her birth until 1944. Queen Margrethe II was born on April 16, 1940, in Amalienborg Palace. Her parents were King Frederick IX of Denmark and Queen Ingrid, born Princess of Sweden. Queen Margrethe II was baptized on May 14, 1940, in Holmens Church and confirmed on April 1, 1955, in the palace church of Fredensborg.
Succession to the Throne
Since the right to the throne was passed through the male line, and King Frederick IX only had daughters, a legislative amendment was made on March 27, 1953, allowing Princess Margrethe of Denmark to take the title of Crown Princess and eventually ascend to the throne.
Marriage and Family
On June 10, 1967, Princess Margrethe married Count Henri Marie Jean André Laborde de Monpezat, who was given the title His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark on the occasion of their marriage. The wedding took place in Holmens Church in Copenhagen, and the celebration was held at Fredensborg Palace. Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik have two sons: Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik Christian (born May 26, 1968) and Prince Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian (born June 7, 1969).
Education
Queen Margrethe II attended Zahles School, a general education school in Copenhagen, from 1946 to 1955. She then studied at North Foreland Lodge, a boarding school in Hampshire, England, from 1955 to 1956. She pursued further studies at various universities in Denmark and Europe, including the University of Copenhagen, the University of Cambridge, the University of Aarhus, Sorbonne University in Paris, and the London School of Economics.
Military and Artistic Interests
Queen Margrethe II served as a recruit in the Women's Air Force Squadron from 1958 to 1970, where she studied various aspects of military affairs. She also had close relationships with some units of the British Army. She is the Supreme Commander of the Danish Armed Forces.
In addition to her military involvement, Queen Margrethe II has a passion for art. She works in various mediums, including drawing, engraving, textile, watercolor, graphics, decoupage, scenography, embroidery, and book illustration. Many of her works have been exhibited in Denmark and abroad and are featured in the State Museum of Art, ARoS Art Museum (Aarhus), and the State Collection of Drawings (Køge).

Queen Margrethe II has received numerous honors and awards, including the Order of the Elephant, the highest Danish order, and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog.
