Early Life and Education
Marie-Guite Dufay was born on May 21st, 1949, in Paris, France. She spent her childhood in the Allier department. Upon graduating from the Institute of Political Studies, she moved to the Franche-Comté region in 1971.
Political Engagements
Dufay's public service began with her involvement in women's rights activism. In 1989, she was elected to the Besançon Municipal Council, where she served as an assistant to the mayor. She also joined the Socialist Party during this time.
Regional Politics
In 2004, Dufay was elected to the Franche-Comté Regional Council, focusing on economic development and employment. Following the passing of Raymond Forni in 2008, she assumed the presidency of the regional council, a position she was re-elected to in 2010.
Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region
In 2015, Dufay was again elected to the council of the newly merged Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region with the support of the Socialist Party. On January 4th, 2016, she was elected as the first president of the new regional council, narrowly defeating Sophie Montel of the National Front by a margin of 51 votes to 24.
Regional Elections and Re-election
Dufay and the Socialist Party secured victories in the regional elections held on June 20th and 27th, 2021. She won the first round with 26.52% of the vote and increased her share to 42.2% in the second round, well ahead of her main rivals Gilles Platret of La République En Marche! and Julien Odoul of the National Rally.
On July 2nd, 2021, Marie-Guite Dufay was re-elected as president of the regional council, receiving 57 votes from the deputies.
