Early Life and Education

Marie Stærke was born on August 31, 1979, in Copenhagen. In 2016, she graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a bachelor's degree in history.

Political Beginnings

Stærke joined the Køge chapter of the Social Democratic youth organization and was eventually elected to the Køge Municipal Council in 2001.

Mayor of Køge

On January 16, 2007, following the passing of her predecessor, Torben Hansen, Stærke was elected Mayor of Køge at an extraordinary council meeting. At the time, she was the youngest female mayor in Danish history. She held this position until 2013 and was re-elected in 2018.

Vice Chair of the Social Democratic Party

On November 13, 2020, Stærke became one of two Vice Chairpersons of the Social Democratic Party, succeeding Frank Jensen, the Mayor of Copenhagen, who resigned amid a sexual harassment scandal.

Personal Life

Stærke has been married to Jesper Hesselberg Andersen, the Chairman of the Køge chapter of the Social Democratic Party, since 2007. They have two children born in 2011 and 2014.
