Marina Kaljurand Biography
Marina Kaljurand was born on September 6, 1962, in Tallinn, Estonia. She is currently serving as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Russia.
Professional Career
Marina Kaljurand has held various diplomatic positions throughout her career. From 2005, she has been the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Estonia to the Russian Federation. Prior to that, from 2004 to 2005, she served as the Ambassador of Estonia to the State of Israel. She also worked as the Vice Chancellor for Legal and Consular Affairs from 2002 to 2005 and as the Director-General of the Legal Department from 1999 to 2001.
Before her diplomatic career, Marina Kaljurand served as an advisor to the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki from 1996 to 1999 and as the Director of the Bureau of International Treaties from 1991 to 1996. She also worked as a law teacher at the Tallinn Economic Technical College from 1986 to 1991.
Education
Marina Kaljurand received her education from various prestigious institutions. In 2000, she attended a workshop on the delimitation of land and sea borders at Durham University in the United Kingdom. In 1995, she studied Government, Law, and the European Union at the College of Public Administration in London. She also participated in a course on international relations at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991 and received a research grant at Lapland University in Finland the same year.
Membership and Awards
Marina Kaljurand is a founding member of the Estonian branch of the International Law Association since 1996. She is fluent in Estonian, English, and Russian, and has basic knowledge of the Finnish language.
She is married to Kalle Kaljurand and has two children. Her hobbies include international law, badminton, aerobics, gardening, and dogs.
Marina Kaljurand has been honored with several awards throughout her career, including the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class, which was awarded to her by the President of Estonia in 2004.
