Maria Zaslavskaya, Lithuanian Princess

Early Life and Marriage

Princess Maria Zaslavskaya was born into the Zaslavsky family, a branch of the Rurik dynasty. Her father was Prince Yuri Vasilich Zaslavsky, and her mother was Sofia Varvara. The exact date of her birth is unknown.

In 1496, Maria married Semyon Olizarovich, the starost of Brest. He held various positions, including starost of Ovrut and Cherkasy.

Widowhood and Battle for Custody

In 1507, Semyon Olizarovich passed away, leaving Maria widowed. She had a daughter, Anastasiya, whose hand in marriage she intended for Konstantin Ostrozhsky, the Grand Hetman of Lithuania.

However, Martin Chreptowicz, a stableman, had other plans. With the permission of Grand Duke Alexander Jagiellonczyk of Lithuania, he took Anastasiya into his custody, along with her dowry.

Maria fiercely contested this marriage and appealed to Grand Duke Sigismund I of Lithuania. In 1507, he issued a decree ordering Chreptowicz to surrender Anastasiya to the custody of Yatsin Olizarovich until she came of age. Maria was also granted the estate of Berestovitsa in the Grodno district.

Political Intrigues and Fate of Anastasiya

In 1509, Martin Chreptowicz was imprisoned for his involvement in the Glinsky rebellion. As a result, the wedding with Anastasiya was annulled, and Konstantin Ostrozhsky became her new guardian.

Maria's influence in the marriage of Anastasiya is uncertain, but she may have played a role in her subsequent marriage to Prince Ivan Vyshnevetsky.

Later Years and Legacy

The last mention of Maria in historical records dates back to 1516, upon the death of Anastasiya's first husband. The exact date and circumstances of her death are unknown, but it is believed that she passed away sometime after 1516.
