Marin Cilic Biography
Early Life and CareerMarin Cilic was born on September 28, 1988, in Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. His family moved to Croatia when he was a child, and he began playing tennis at the age of seven. Cilic quickly rose through the ranks of junior tennis, winning the European Under-16 Championship in 2004 and the Wimbledon Boys' Singles title in 2005.
Professional Tennis Career
Cilic turned professional in 2005 and quickly made a name for himself. He won his first ATP title in 2008 at the Chennai Open and went on to win several more titles in the years that followed. Cilic's biggest career win came at the 2014 US Open, where he defeated Roger Federer in the final to become the first Croatian man to win a Grand Slam singles title.
Grand Slam Success
Cilic has been a consistent performer at Grand Slam tournaments throughout his career. In addition to his US Open win, he has reached the final of the Australian Open twice (2018 and 2021) and the Wimbledon Championships once (2017). He has also reached the semifinals of the French Open three times (2016, 2017, and 2020).
ATP Tour Success
Beyond his Grand Slam success, Cilic has also achieved great success on the ATP Tour. He has won a total of 20 ATP singles titles, including two Masters 1000 titles (the Cincinnati Masters in 2016 and 2017). Cilic has also been ranked as high as number three in the world, which he first achieved in 2018.
Davis Cup Success
Cilic has also been a key member of the Croatian Davis Cup team. He has helped Croatia reach the Davis Cup final three times (2016, 2018, and 2021), winning the title in 2018.
Personal Life
Cilic is married to Kristina Milkovic and they have two children. He is known for his friendly personality and his passion for tennis. Cilic is also a philanthropist and has established a foundation to support young tennis players in Croatia.
