Mark Riccobono: Trailblazing Leader in Blind Education
Early Life and DiagnosisFrom the tender age of five, Mark Riccobono understood his limited eyesight. Diagnosed with glaucoma and aniridia, his vision steadily declined, promising a future of possible blindness.
Academic Achievements
Despite medical predictions, Riccobono excelled academically. As a high school student, he actively engaged in debate club and a marketing program for aspiring business leaders. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in business management.
Leadership and Activism
While in college, Riccobono became the founding president of the Wisconsin Association of Blind Students. His organizational skills and leadership earned him a place in the Iron Cross Society, an honor society for exceptional student leaders. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1999.
Corporate Experience
Upon graduation, Riccobono joined the renowned management training program at Sears, Roebuck, and Company. Here, he dedicated himself to addressing issues faced by the blind and visually impaired, a commitment that led to his appointment to the state council on blindness.
Director of Blind Education
At the age of 24, Riccobono became the first director of the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Under his leadership, the struggling center transformed into a thriving, effective organization.
National Advocacy
In 2003, Riccobono joined the National Federation of the Blind to advocate for blind education. To enhance his knowledge and support his work, he pursued a Master of Education degree, graduating in 2009.
Executive Director of the Jernigan Institute
Today, Riccobono serves as executive director of the Jernigan Institute within the NFB. The institute is a unique educational institution founded and led by blind individuals.
Innovations and Projects
Riccobono leads a range of initiatives and projects aimed at "harnessing the collective hopes and aspirations of blind people into action programs that empower blind people." He constantly seeks ways to improve the lives of the blind, including the development of a driving interface enabling blind people to operate vehicles successfully.
