Career in the FBI

In the early 1940s, Felt began working for the FBI. He consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and competence in his work, such as conducting high-quality hunts for German spies during wartime. By the 1960s, Felt had earned a solid reputation and became one of the FBI's leading experts. In the early 1970s, he assumed the position of Deputy Director, making him the second most significant person in the bureau after Director J. Edgar Hoover.

Conflict with President Nixon

Unfortunately, Felt never became the Director of the FBI as President Nixon deemed him unfit for the role and appointed someone else. In response, Felt periodically leaked information to journalists about the wrongdoing occurring in the White House and how Nixon's entourage was covering it up. Nixon suspected Felt of directly contributing to the leaked information and did everything possible to force him to resign from the FBI, which ultimately happened at Felt's own request.

Whistleblowing and Controversy

After leaving his position, Felt provided additional information about the happenings within the FBI to Congress. In the early 1980s, Felt faced accusations of unauthorized wiretapping of government conversations and almost faced terrorism charges. Fortunately, President Reagan, who had assumed office by then, pardoned Felt.

Revelation and Later Years

Nearly twenty years later, Felt finally came forward and admitted to his own actions. By this time, he was 91 years old, and his confession could not disrupt his peace. Felt passed away on December 19, 2008, due to multiple strokes and Alzheimer's disease.
