Early Life and Education
Martin Dempsey was born in Goshen, New York, and graduated from Goshen Catholic Central High School. He went on to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1974. He later obtained a Master of Arts degree in English from Duke University in 1984, a Master of Science degree in Military Studies from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1988, and a Master of Science degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College in 1995.
Military Career
Early AssignmentsDempsey's military career began as a Second Lieutenant on June 5, 1974. He served in various roles, including Platoon Leader and Division Adjutant with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (Reconnaissance). In 1979, he became the Automotive Officer for the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, and subsequently commanded the Headquarters Troop and Alpha Troop.
Command and Staff Assignments
From 1988 to 1991, Dempsey served as Chief of Staff for the 4th Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 3rd Armored Division, and later became the G3 for the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Armored Division. He saw combat in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1993, he became the Chief of Armor in the U.S. Army Forces Command. Dempsey's command assignments included the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (Reconnaissance) from 1996 to 1998 and the 1st Armored Division from 2001 to 2003, with deployments to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dempsey held several senior leadership roles, including Deputy Commanding General, United States Central Command (2007-2008); Acting Commander, United States Central Command (2008); Chief of Training and Doctrine Command, United States Army (2008-2011); and Chief of Staff of the United States Army (2011).
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
On September 30, 2011, Dempsey became the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeding Admiral Mike Mullen.
