Biography of Martin Sarkisian
Martin Grigoryevich Sarkisian (Armenian: Մարտին Գրիգորիեվիչ Սարգսյան, born March 3, 1958 in Yerevan) is a member of the Armenian parliament.
Education and Career
From 1974 to 1979, Sarkisian attended the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and graduated with a degree in Education. He worked as a teacher in Aparan from 1979 to 1982. Sarkisian then served in the Soviet Army from 1982 to 1984.
From 1984 to 1990, Sarkisian worked in the executive committee of the Soviet District Council and City Council of Yerevan. In 1991, he became a deputy of the Shengavit District Council in Yerevan. From 1993 to 1998, Sarkisian was the general director and chairman of the board of the "Model Footwear" light industry factory. He was also a member of the Armenian parliament from 1998 to 1999, serving on the Standing Committee on National Security and Internal Affairs. Sarkisian is a member of the Republican Party of Armenia.
Charitable and Political Involvement
In 1999, Sarkisian founded the Shengavit Charitable Foundation. He served as the prefect of the Shengavit community in Yerevan from 1998 to 2007. From 1999 to 2001, Sarkisian represented Armenia in the Chamber of Local Self-Government of the European Union. He was also the chairman of the Council of Trade and Industrial Chambers of the CIS from 2003 to 2004 and the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Armenia from 2002 to 2007.
On May 12, 2007, Sarkisian was elected as a member of the Armenian parliament. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs and a member of the Republican Party of Armenia. Throughout his career, Sarkisian has been recognized for his contributions and has been awarded a commendation from the Minister of Defense of Armenia in 1999, a commendation from the Prime Minister in 2005, and a commemorative medal in 2006.
