Early Life and Club Career

Born in 1977 in Cape Town, South Africa, Aaron Mokoena began his football journey with local amateur clubs. At the age of 17, he signed with professional club Cape Town Spurs. After three seasons with Spurs, Mokoena made the move to one of South Africa's most successful teams, Mamelodi Sundowns FC.

National Team Success

Mokoena's exceptional performances earned him call-ups to various South African youth and senior teams. As captain of the South African U-20 team, he led the side to a silver medal at the 1997 African Youth Championship. He also represented his country at the U-17 World Cup and the U-20 World Cup.

Captaincy and International Highlights

Mokoena's leadership abilities and unwavering determination saw him appointed as captain of the South African Olympic team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also played a key role in South Africa's victory at the Cosafa Cup in 2002.

African and Continental Glory

With Mamelodi Sundowns, Mokoena celebrated the club's Premier Soccer League title in the 2001/02 season. The following year, he captained Sundowns to the final of the CAF Champions League, the African equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

Injury Setback

Just before the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Mokoena suffered a devastating knee injury that prevented him from taking part in the tournament.
